It is flanked at one end by a destroyed chapel fronted by an expressive, weathered eight-foot baroque statue, the only artefact of any value that remains in the villages. The 16th century town of Poggioreale in the Belice Valley region of the Sicilian countryside experienced an earthquake in 1968. The town was declared uninhabitable and a new town was built by the Italian government for the citizens. These are photos from my two visits 20 years apart first in 1999 and then in 2019.
